Regenerative

It’s about building:

Soil
Habitat
Diversity

At the Lazy Z Ranch,
we specialize in Regenerative Bee Pastures, striving to:

  • Maintain diverse, multi-species cover crop.

  • Use less water more responsibly.

  • Turn over less ground.

  • Avoid synthetic fertilizers and herbicides.

  • Never use insecticides.

  • Manage livestock appropriately.

  • Promote more native and drought tolerant flora.

  • Provide space and support for our animal neighbors.

  • Foster a generous posture of abundance, not scarcity.

Goals for 2023

Apiary

Maintain apiary at 35-40 hives, develop our own breeding stock and sell splits to local beekeepers. Support other Sisters-area beekeepers.

Livestock

Continue partnership with a local grazier to responsibly manage short-term, high-density grazing of the regenerative bee pastures as needed to stimulate and sustain soil health.

Regenerative Bee Pastures

Establish 20 more acres of drought-resistant, grazable pollinators blend, and work with DSWC to use as little water as possible.

Partner

Identify at least one other local regenerative farmer with whom to establish a long-term relationship that benefits all invested parties: plant, animal, and human.

Equine

Maintain integration of our pasture-boarded horses (and goats) into the regenerative process by actively managing their paddocks.

Wine

Open a farmhouse meadery that promotes pollinator education and conservation, using all local and sustainably produced ingredients.

Equine

Mature integration of our pasture-boarded horses (and goats) into the regenerative process by actively managing their paddocks.

Begin working with all necessary parties to open a farmhouse meadery tasting room that promotes pollinator education and conservation.

Goals for 2021

Grow the apiary to 16-20 hives using a combination of purchased bees, spring splits, and swarms. Focus on building at least 300 excellent frames of comb.

Regenerative Bee Pastures

Use a no-till drill to seed 30+ acres with diverse, multi-species cover crop, heavy in native and drought-resistant plants for pollinators.

Partner

Identify at least one other local regenerative farmer with whom to establish a long-term relationship that benefits all invested parties: plant, animal, and human.

Equine

Integrate our pasture-boarded horses into the regenerative process by actively managing and rotating their paddocks.

Wine

Ramp up and innovate experimentation with the ancient and patient process of turning honey and water into honey wine.

Wisdom

“Clearly sustainable agricultural practices might be content with answering the question ‘how do we farm so we don’t leave the land worse than we found it?’ Regenerative agriculture however takes things a step further by compelling farmers to answer the question, ‘How do we farm so we leave the land better than we found it?’”

— Nnaemeka Ugochukwu

“More than a mere alternative strategy, regenerative agriculture represents a fundamental shift in our culture's relationship to nature.”

— Charles Eisenstein

“When you concentrate on agriculture and industry and are frugal in expenditures, Heaven cannot impoverish your state.”

— Xun Kuang

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God.”

— Leviticus 19:9-10
